Anytime we have something not working right in our bodies, we hear, “There’s a pill for that!” I will tell you first, that I believe medication is necessary to aid what our bodies cannot do. However, I am a strong advocate, of listening to our bodies and doing the research before swallowing anything. Our bodies are designed to heal themselves, but all too often we are in a hurry, or we cannot stand the discomfort. And some of us won’t make the effort it takes to do things naturally.

I used to take a pill anytime I had a headache, or swallow pink stuff for a tummy ache. It is how I grew up. In the first half of my adult life, I worked in medical as a surgery coordinator, medical secretary, and in medical records. I wasn’t a technician or doctor, but I wanted to study all I could about the human body, so I bathed myself in medical books, and I asked the physicians and surgeons I worked for questions.

I learned what was best for my body – especially after suffering from depression during winter (S.A.D.) when I was younger. I used to be on anti-depressants because I was told by well-meaning friends, and television commercials that “there was a pill for that!” With a doctor monitoring my progress, I weaned myself off the medication and worked on three key ingredients for my life – to get enough sleep, eat healthily, and be more active.

This was over fifteen years ago, and I have not needed prescription aid to pull me out of winter slumps, or to feel natural energy available through what God Himself created. And, as a believer in Christ, God also grew my spirit – and my attitude change was also part of that prescription for life.

I refused to label myself if my body felt out of whack. We want so much to figure things out or identify with something that we accept the labels of society when God has no limit! With God, all things are possible! Matthew 19:26

So, when one of my sisters told me before I turn 40, I will have high blood pressure, I refused that for myself. My mother and three sisters all had high blood pressure, but I told the Lord when I was 38 years old, “If I have to have a family ailment, I think I could handle arthritis Lord, but I don’t want high blood pressure.”

I didn’t make that a prayer “in Jesus’ name” or even think He’d take my plea seriously, but at age 55 I still have normal blood pressure – and I do have arthritis. It’s a little humorous to me, but I still praise the Lord each time I check my BP and it is normal. As many times as I have fallen off the ‘health wagon’ with my eating, I am amazed that my little ‘wish’ to God (that I wouldn’t even say was a prayer) and with my determined will, I do not have high blood pressure.

It is awesome to know that we have a higher resource than the over-written RX. Again, I am not saying that medication and medical aid are not necessary in certain cases, but I am saying before we ask for the pill, put an effort into finding what natural resources we have first.

My prescription for life is first, PRAYER. Second, becoming aware of my body, how it works, and what is available in food and herbs, exercise, and good rest – then you will need to know if you need to see your physician. You will be amazed how adding supplements, being active and eating nourishing foods, and making yourself rest, also changes the endorphins in our brain. Mind, body, and SPIRIT. Prayer, and drawing on God’s strength with these key life ingredients – eating healthy, resting, and being active, should always come before you RX.
